This post has an image attached (or linked) to it. Attaching an image will automatically resize it to fit the current template. Automatic resizing is based on width, with sizes from 80 to 800 pixels wide.
Follow up:
You can create a template that will resize an image to 240 pixels wide in the sidebar, 400 wide in the main body on multipost pages, and 600 wide on the item's permalink page. You can link the resized image to a larger resized version, the item's permalink, the original image, or nothing (as seen in this template).
